On September 10, 2008, Governor John Baldacci and State Representative Bruce McDonald attended the second keel laying ceremony at Washburn & Doughty since the July 11th fire. The company proudly laid the keel for Hull 97, a 98’ Z Drive Tug under construction for Moran Towing.
“I wanted to come down and personally thank you guys for what you have done and the message you are sending to all citizens in Maine,” said Baldacci. “We are very proud of you. You had your backs against the wall; you didn’t know what was going to happen the next day, let alone next week or next month. But you guys delivered, you worked together and showed the world what Maine people do through tough times and challenges.”
Hull 97’s keel was laid outdoors, to the east of Washburn & Doughty’s former building, on the property previously known as Boothbay Marine. Boothbay Marine was recently purchased by Washburn & Doughty, which had planed to use the property for an expansion. After the fire, plans changed and it was quickly decided to use the property to construct two 98’ Z Drive Tugs already under contract for Moran Towing.
Harry Crooker & Sons were contracted to provide excavation services on Washburn & Doughty’s new build site. Work included leveling the site, building a retaining wall, and reinforcing the build site.
